Concerning Medicare

This announcement is provided by GCI treasurer, Mat Morgan.

medicareGCI pastors and other families who are enrolled for Medicare in the U.S. should be aware of important information related to Medicare coverage of hospital care.

Please be aware of the distinction that Medicare makes between hospitalization classified as “inpatient” vs. hospitalization classified as “outpatient.” Knowing the difference could save you a lot of money and affect whether you qualify for skilled nursing care at the end of a hospital stay.

In how it pays for hospitalization and related services, Medicare distinguishes between “under observation” (outpatient) treatment and inpatient treatment. As the patient, you won’t necessarily know how your doctor and hospital are classifying your stay. The centers for Medicare and Medicaid services suggest that you ASK YOUR DOCTOR how your stay is being classified each day you are in the hospital. Doing so might save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenditures.

To learn more go to www.nbcnews.com/video/nightly-news/54026469/ and read page 32 of Medicare & You 2014—the publication you were sent when you enrolled for Medicare (available online at www.medicare.gov/pubs/pdf/10050.pdf).

If you have purchased a Medicare supplement insurance policy or have a Medicare Advantage (HMO) plan, understanding this issue may make a difference in your ultimate costs. It would be a good idea to find out how your plan views inpatient and outpatient costs.

Neither inpatient nor outpatient care is necessarily better than the other—each situation is determined based on the patient’s symptoms and medical needs. The important thing is that you be aware of what treatment you’re actually receiving, how it is being classified and thus how it will affect your family’s finances.

New pastor installed

ordinationWe are pleased to announce that Daniel Espinoza was ordained an elder and installed as pastor of the GCI congregation in Colorado Springs, Colorado on January 19. The ordination prayer is shown at right.

This special service was led by Mark McCulley, senior pastor of GCI’s Denver, North church and former pastor of the Colorado Springs congregation (Mark is standing at the center of the back row in the picture below. Daniel is second from left).

Several of Daniel’s family and friends attended the special service. Members of the congregation (where Daniel has grown up) have warmly embraced his pastoral leadership.

Congratulations to both Daniel and his Colorado Springs congregation. It’s wonderful to see the passing of the baton of leadership to the younger generation.

Exponential 2014

ExponentialGCI Church Administration and Development recommends Exponential 2014—a conference for pastors and ministry leaders who want to learn about church planting and renewal—with an emphasis on participating in what Jesus is doing in their local communities. In 2014, Exponential will be held in two locations:

  • Orlando, Florida on April 28-May 1
  • Los Angeles, California on October 6-9

The theme for this year’s conference, Seek + Save, is based on Luke 19:9: “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” It will take a fresh look at evangelism. In doing so it will rethink and challenge some old paradigms, helping us rediscover Jesus’ timeless truths.

The conference features plenary sessions conducted by internationally known church planters and ministry leaders. Also featured are pre-conference intensives and more than 125 workshops—all related to church planting and church development.

To register and for more information go to www.exponential.org. Here is an informational video:

2014 US regional conferences

Regional conf 2014 logoGCI’s 2014 US regional conferences will be held in seven locations. With the theme shown at right, these conferences will celebrate our journey toward GCnextplanting seeds for GCI’s next generation.

We rejoice in the way God is leading us—sending the Spirit who helps us share in Jesus’ faith, love and hope (1 Thessalonians 1:2-5). At each conference, congregational and denominational leaders will report on what they have seen God doing and then share their dreams concerning what he will yet do. As you’ll see in the schedule below, considerable time will be given for small and large group discussions where we’ll come together to share our own stories, prayerfully seeking to discern what God is doing and how we may join in.

The 2014 regional conferences are open to all GCI members and friends. GCI-USA senior pastors receive continuing education credit for their attendance. Keep an eye on GCI Weekly Update for further information and registration. The costs at each location will be about the same as two years ago.
