Death of Shelby Grundy

This prayer request is from Senior Pulley, wife of GCI-Bermuda pastor Cecil Pulley.

I am sorry to report the passing of my brother Shelby Grundy on November 1, 2015. He was 67 years old. Shelby became a part of WCG/GCI in 1967 and has been a faithful member ever since. He attended Ambassador College and graduated in 1978. He also worked in WCG’s television studio for nearly 25 years.

Shelby was well known for his jovial and upbeat attitude and sense of humor, which he was able to maintain even in the midst of trial and pain. He was able to witness to many about the love and goodness of God.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of almost 40 years, Marietta, son Matthew (wife Jocelyn), daughter Susan, sisters Rose Arnold, Alice Roach (husband Donald) and Senior Pulley (husband Cecil) and brother Mether Grundy (wife Emily), five grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends all over the world.

Please remember our family in prayer.

GCI school in Haiti

This prayer request is from Joseph Franklin, GCI pastor and director of our church school in Haiti.

Joseph Franklin

Please join me in praying for the participants in our school in Haiti:

  • Several of our children who are battling an epidemic of cough and bone pain
  • Micheline Darius, the principal of our school, who is fighting typhoid-malaria
  • Mie Gerale Vainqueur, our sixth grade teacher who had ovary surgery and was sent home to convalesce for 60 days (we are now having difficulty finding a competent teacher to replace her)

I also request prayer as I continue to search for younger, reliable men and women to whom I can entrust the oversight of our school. Also please pray for the nation of Haiti—it is experiencing crime greater than what we’ve ever known. Some of our church families living at a distance from the capital tell of increasing insecurity. Though we are more and more convinced that we are on mission with Jesus, we face increased difficulties in these trying times. Thanks for your prayers for us.

John McKenna

Here’s an update on a previous request for prayer for John McKenna, professor at Grace Communion Seminary.

McKennaJohn’s wife Mickey reports that John is home after 18 days in the hospital. He is able to walk, though very weak. He will be having therapy four times a week over the next few weeks to help him regain his speech and improve his memory.

Mickey extends her gratitude for all the cards and calls, and asks for continued prayer for John and herself in this difficult time.

Typhoon Lando

A massive typhoon named Lando (Koppu is the international name) recently ravaged the Philippines. To read about its impact on our Filipino members, click here. Thanks for your prayers for them. At this point, financial assistance from outside the Philippines has not been requested, though donations to the GCI Disaster Relief Fund are always welcomed (click here to learn about that fund).

Death of Luann Patrickson

We were greatly saddened to learn of the recent death of Luann Patrickson. Here is a message from her husband, George Patrickson, who is a retired GCI-Canada pastor:

George and Luann
George and Luann Patrickson

It is with a heavy heart that I write to let you know Luann died on October 12 in Lions Gate hospital. During her last week she started experiencing severe difficulties and was admitted to the hospital. Her condition was deteriorating quite rapidly and she spent her final two days under palliative care. The family was able to be with her and each had time alone to say their personal goodbye.

It will be difficult coming to terms with the fact that she is no longer with us and we will miss her warmth, kindness, gentle spirit and all the many wonderful things she brought into our lives.

On behalf of Luann and all the family, I thank everyone for their love and prayers offered for her over the last 12 months as she battled cancer. She was appreciative of these and of the many cards and messages she received.

Prayers for the family over the next while would also be appreciated as we come to terms with her passing.

Willi Mandel

Here from GCI-Canada retired pastor Willi Mandel is an update related to a previous prayer request concerning his health.

I received some good news recently. A cat-scan showed that my tumor has not grown since last year. The doctor asked how I have been feeling the last few months—I said I felt OK. He gave me a print-out of the scan results, which show that my tumor may be a thymic neoplasm (thyoma or thymic carcinoma). He suggested another scan in nine months. The scan also showed that I have severe coronary artery calcification. I have an appointment with another doctor in October to follow up on that issue. Thank you for your prayers so far, and now I request prayer about this new issue.
